Citrine - Origin and Benefits

Let's discover together the citrine, stone of creativity, self-confidence and success!

Hardness: 7

Chakra: sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra

Let's learn!

Coming from the Greek "citrus", meaning lemon, its name calls on its color. Its name could also derive from the Latin "citrina", meaning "yellow".

It can sometimes be called "yellow hyaline quartz".

It is assumed that it was the scientist Georges Bauer who fixed the name "citrine" after having identified and deepened the mineralogical and gemological knowledge of his time.

It is a stone that has been considered lucky since Ancient Greece. She fought against the evil eye and evil powers while protecting against snake bites.

In Rome, it was used to make pendants and cabochons in which symbols of protection were engraved.

In Ancient Egypt, priests and priestesses already practicing lithotherapy. The color was then enunciator of the power of the stone. This stone was put in their pocket as a stone of success and abundance and thus bring them luck.

In Egyptian culture, this stone was also considered a representation of the warrior goddess Sekhmet, a lion-headed woman goddess.

In Greek mythology, citrine was the symbol of Chiron, son of the god Chronos.

Stone of fire, the South American shamans used it during rites in order to eliminate the limits of Man.

There is a legend that a sorcerer locked away the "cloak of dawn" somewhere between Brazil and Bolivia. The sun would then have then hidden it in the bowels of the Earth, thus giving it a yellow color.

A conquistador would have, a few years later, received as a gift from his wife Anahi, who was actually a princess of the tribe of Ayoeros - descendant of the sorcerer, a fragment of this yellow stone. Anahi was then sacrificed by her people so that she would not go to Spain with her husband. Dying in her husband's arms, she would then have given him a citrine as a token of her eternal love.

A mine is named Anahi in reference to this legend, and the miners who worked there in the 19th century said that they sometimes heard the cries of the conquistador mourning his dear wife.

It is also a stone that Queen Victoria greatly appreciated.

It is a stone that was used a lot in the 19th century as decoration, especially for combs and tiaras.

It is a stone that was used a lot for jewelry in the 19th century as a symbol of the art deco period between the wars. Hollywood stars like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford wore it.

This is the stone that is offered on the 13th wedding anniversary.

However, it remains a very rare stone and it is therefore necessary to pay attention, as much as possible obviously, to the fake stones which circulate on the market.

What is it?

This stone approaches its yellow color because of its low presence of iron oxide.

It is therefore a translucent stone that can change from pale yellow to orange-brown, just like golden yellow.

It is part of the family of silicates and belongs to the family of quartz.

Deposits can be found on the Isle of Arran in Scotland, in the province of Antananarivo in Madagascar, in Germany, in Brazil, in Spain, in Austria, in the United States, in Australia, in Russia, in Uruguay or in the Czech Republic.

Warning: synthetic citrines have emerged. It is then amethyst which is heated to more than 550 celcius degrees, changing its purple color to yellow. It is then "heated citrine".

Purification and Recharging

Some will say that citrine is one of the few stones that does not need purification and recharging because it absorbs negative energy and then removes it.

However, you can never be too careful, so here are some ways to purify and recharge your citrine, it's up to you to see what you prefer to do or not:

After wiping your stone with a soft cloth, you can place it in a glass or clay container and fill it with tap or spring water. You can soak it overnight or run it under running water for 10-15 minutes.

To recharge it, you can place it in the rays of the moon. If this is not feasible, you can expose it to the gentle rays of the morning sun for a few minutes so that the UV rays do not reduce its color.

To work on the solar plexus chakra, citrine can be combined with stones that have a positive effect on this same chakra. Examples include landscape jasper, tiger's eye, amber, pyrite or even yellow jasper.
