Garnet - Origin and Benefits

Let's discover garnet together, a stone of joy, strength, confidence and anchoring.

Hardness: between 6.5 and 7.5

Chakra: heart chakra, root chakra, sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra

Let's learn!

From the Latin "malum granatum", or "grain fruit", or even "grain apple", the term garnet designates the pomegranate which grains have the same color as this superb stone.

The Romans also called it "carbuncle". From the Latin "carbunculus", or "little coal".

The French word garnet (=grenat) comes from the Old English word "gernet" meaning "dark red".

With its presence throughout history, garnet is found in many peoples, religions and beliefs.

However garnet was sometimes confused with rubies and spinels during Antiquity where identification methods were sometimes inaccurate.

In the Bible, the stone was used by Noah as a guide for his ark in the darkness of the Flood.

The Koran, for its part, affirms that the fourth heaven is made up of this stone.

Among the Vikings, it was used during funeral ceremonies to guide the dead to Valhalla, their paradise.

The rise of garnet then made its arrival in the 5th century AD during the fall of the Roman Empire. Indeed, the "barbarians" used the stone in jewelry.

In the Middle Ages, it was the symbol of friendship and courage. It was then given to travelers so that they would keep their strength.

With its blood color, it was sometimes also equated with fighting.

Especially during the Crusades, during which it was worn under the armor of knights to make them invulnerable.

This stone was also used in Europe in the 18th century on ornaments.

In 1891 it was used by the warriors of Hunza (in the north of Pakistan) as bullets with which the warriors fired on the British in order to win their independence.

However, this stone was also used as a jewelry ornament, especially in the sarcophagi of Ancient Egypt.

The jeweler of the Russian imperial family, Carl Fabergé, also used garnet for his jewelry.

Currently, it is used in jewelry for its aesthetics, as well as in industry for its abrasive qualities.

What is it?

Rather abundant, garnet deposits are found in igneous rocks, in pegmatites, and therefore especially in rocks in contact with magma.

This stone is mainly red, brown or even purple, but can sometimes have green, yellow or orange colors.

Blue garnet, on the other hand, does not exist.

It exists in powder form, and was used to roughen and polish stones, especially quarter stones, using its abrasive qualities.

There are several types of garnet with different colors depending on their composition:

- almandine garnet - violet red

- Demantoid garnet - light green

- Hessonite Garnet - Dark Orange

- Pyrope garnet - blood red

- Rhodolite Garnet - Rose Red

- Spessartite garnet - orange red

- Tsavorite garnet - deep green

- Uvarovite garnet - dark green

The majority of garnets are very often presented in two categories: nesosilicates, and fine stones when the stone is of high quality. We speak of garnetite when the stone is composed almost exclusively of garnet.

The main deposits are in Tanzania, India and Madagascar.

But also in Russia, Mali, Canada and Brazil.
